What is the Employment Process?


For Entry Level Positions

Step 1. Apply for the position of Entry Level Police Officer

Step 2. Written Test
Offered to those meeting the minimum qualifications.

Step 3. Physical Agilities Test (PAT)
Offered to those who pass the written test.

Step 4. Qualifications Appraisal Interview (QAI)
Offered to those who pass the PAT.

Step 5. Personal History Statement (PHS) Interview
CA POST background packet given to those invited to a QAI.

Step 6. Pre-Employment Suitability Examination (PESE)
Offered to those scoring highest on the QAI and passing the PHS interview.

Step 7. Chief’s Interview
Offered to those scoring highest on the QAI and passing the PHS interview.

Step 8. Background Investigation
Offered to those selected by the Chief.

Step 9. Tentative Job Offer
Offered upon successful completion of the background investigation.

Step 10. Polygraph Examination
Applicants will be given a polygraph examination. Exam will confirm information noted on the applicant’s PHS.

Step 11. Psychological Examination
Applicants will be evaluated by a licensed psychologist. .

Step 12. Medical Examination
Applicants will undergo a complete medical examination given by a licensed physician.

For Lateral or Academy Graduate Positions

Step 1. Graduation from or current enrollment in a California Basic Police Academy

Step 2. Apply for the position of Academy Graduate or Lateral Police Officer
