The first police car owned by the City Of El Cajon was a 1942 Ford Fordor.
Rumor has it that it was purchased from San Diego Police Department, but no
supporting documentation exists. After months of effort to find a 1942 Ford to
restore to the appearance of the original El Cajon Police Car, a suitable
candidate was found in Hurricane Utah in 2002. With a donation from the El Cajon
Mounted Officer Association and money obtained from a collection, the car was
purchased and brought back to California. Parts from two other 1942 cars (in
less pristine condition) were purchased to help with the restoration.
The exterior of the car is now complete and work on the interior is in progress.
We wanted to give the public a preview of the new/old car. Some interior shots
will be provided as the inside takes shape.
Our goal is to have the car on display at the new Police Headquarters and
available for recruiting and public functions
This restoration project sponsored by El Cajon Police Department Historical Society, El Cajon Police Officers Association, Training Officer David Larson and Mounted Officer Larry King along with help, donations and services provided by many individuals and businesses.
Please see our slide show to see the car in various stages of repair.
