Giving Up Your Pet
One of the hardest decisions to make is whether to give up your pet to the shelter. Most behavior problems are a result of the lack of exercise.
We suggest the following to help you before you decide to bring your pet to the shelter:
- Take your pet to your veterinarian for a complete exam. Spraying, frequent urination, crying and other issues may be symptoms of medical conditions.
- If your dog digs, chews or is being destructive, your dog most likely needs a lot more EXERCISE. Get in the routine of taking your dog for a walk at least 30 minutes a day. It will be good for you, too! Depending on the energy level of your pet, you may have to adjust how many times a day your pet needs a long walk to tire him/her out.
- Give your dog a “job” to do. Teach him/her to fetch a ball or Frisbee.
- Sign up for classes. There are numerous training and behavior classes offered by local humane societies and individuals.
- Consult an animal behaviorist or trainer. These instructors are usually certified and can provide helpful insight.

Come to the Shelter and see who’s here! We have a variety of dogs and cats and other animals. The population changes daily. We have something for everyone including pure breeds, seniors, large, small and everything in between.

Adoption costs include microchip and vaccines.
If you live within the City of El Cajon, you will need to purchase a 1 year dog license for any dog over the age of 4 months for an additional cost of $20.
